The Young Hero and the Horrible Giant

04/19/2020

God's people demanded, "Give us a king!  We want to be like all our neighbors with a tall, strong king."  So, God gave them a king.  A tall, strong king like they wanted.

God's people soon figured out that the king they wanted was not the king they needed.  King Saul was angry and mean.  And, when Saul faced someone even taller than he was, he crumbled in fear.

But God had already anointed a new king, a teeny-weenie one.  This young boy would show that God's people did not need a king who was tall and strong.  They needed a king who loved and trusted God, because God was the one who would fight their battles.

Still, as good as David was, God's people needed a greater King.  They needed a King who could defeat their greatest enemies: sin and death.

All of the Bible points forward to this great hero!  The Bible is like a map that leads us the Ultimate Prophet, Priest, and King!

Intro

The people faced an enemy so horrible and un-defeatable!  The king they wanted, Saul, trembled in fear.  But a teeny boy who had stopped by to deliver food wondered,

Where has their courage gone?  This is God's battle after all!

Read the Story for Yourself!

1 Samuel 17

Take a sec to read the story directly from God's Word!  You can find it in 1 Samuel 17.

A great way to read it is in the International Children's BIble (ICB) translation.  It's a simple and accurate Bible translation designed for kids.  Adults, like me, like it too!

Saul knew that he couldn't win this battle.  David knew that God would.

Verse for the Week

"I keep my eyes always on the Lord.  I will not be shaken."

Psalm 16:8

Sample Prayer

Father God, you always win your battles.  Thank you for sending Jesus to win the battle I could never win!  He defeated sin and death, so I could know and love you!                                                                                                                                                       Amen.

God always wins His battles!

David had the courage to take on the horrible giant, because He knew whose battle that this was.  It was God's battle.  And God always wins His battles.

But David was not just a hero on that day.  He was also a writer of poems and songs.  He wrote songs about how God had made him in his mother's womb.  It's that poem that inspired this song!
